Difference Between Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence Reports / BEx Analyzer Vs Excel OLAP Vs BO Analysis Edition for MS Office.

Crystal Reports is under SAP’s Crystal Solutions product portfolio while Web Intelligence is under SAP’s Business Objects Web Intelligence line. Crystal Reports is best for highly structured reports while Web Intelligence is suited for ‘unstructured’ reports.

Crystal Reports has an advantage when the presentation and formatting of the report is of the highest concern. Crystal allows for pixel perfect, high fidelity reports, and allows the report developer more control of the presentation and data access. Crystal reports take a bit longer to develop, and require a higher understanding of database design and logic.

WebI reports is the better solution when the report needs to be developed quickly and will be developed by a Business User. Crystal Reports is the better solution when the report presentation is of the highest concern, and the report can be developed by an IT Developer of Business Power User.

Crystal Reports can’t have more than one report in it. Like in BO reports we can insert a report just like adding worksheets in Excel workbook. But still crystal reports have greater flexibility in terms of Report Format, data exporting, Formulas, Section Expert, Paging Formulas, Group Expert, Record Selection Expert, Group Selection Expert etc……….

For Crystal Reports, users get pre-defined templates while Web Intelligence users use Ad hoc reports accessing data from a ‘universe’.
Developers for Crystal Reports require high knowledge of the application and database systems, which isn’t the case with Web Intelligence.

Generic Extraction via Function Module

How does the extraction API work in case you are extracting data using a self defined function module with generic delta? Sometimes, if your application or requirement makes it necessary, you have to create your own function module to extract the data from whatever sap system to bw. Therefore you normally make a copy of the standard fm 'RSAX_BIW_GET_DATA_SIMPLE'. To make this new function work for you, you have to realize the following. 1) The FM gets called by the extraction API for at least 2 times.
